NoteKey Support
NoteKey is a custom iPhone and iPad keyboard for mental health clinicians. It expands note skeletons, keeps clinical spelling intact, and puts an intervention phrase library one tap from the keys. This page covers setup, the questions people ask most, and how to reach a human.
Fastest fix for almost everything: open the NoteKey app once after installing or updating. The keyboard reads your snippets and settings from a shared container, and opening the app once is what fills it.
Setting Up the Keyboard
- Open Settings, then General, then Keyboard, then Keyboards.
- Tap Add New Keyboard and choose NoteKey.
- Tap NoteKey in the list and turn on Allow Full Access.
- In any app, hold the globe key and pick NoteKey.
Why Full Access?
Only to let the keyboard read your own snippets, templates and settings from NoteKey's private shared container. The keyboard has no networking code at all, so it cannot send anything anywhere, with or without Full Access. You can confirm that with Airplane Mode: it behaves identically.
NoteKey still types, autocorrects and expands its built-in skeletons without Full Access. Your custom snippets are what need it.
Using It
Note skeletons
Type a trigger and the whole note scaffolds itself. .dap,
.soap and .birp are in the free tier;
Pro adds the rest. After it expands, tap through the fill-in fields instead of
hunting with the caret. The progress chip shows where you are in the walk.
The panel
The NoteKey key opens a panel with four tabs: Skeletons, Phrases, Meds and Terms. Phrases filter by modality, and when you are standing in a skeleton field that maps to a section, the Phrases tab opens already filtered to it.
Dictation
Tap the mic and NoteKey opens its own app to record, because iOS does not let a keyboard use the microphone. Transcription is Apple's on-device recognition. When you are done, NoteKey hands the text back and returns you to where you were typing.
Common Questions
The keyboard is blank, or my snippets are missing
Open the NoteKey app once, then switch back. If the app has never been opened since install, the shared container is empty and the keyboard has nothing to read.
My EHR will not let me switch keyboards
Some apps mark note fields as secure, and iOS blocks every third-party keyboard in a secure field, not just NoteKey. The workaround is to draft in Notes or Mail with NoteKey and paste into the record. If you hit this in a specific EHR, email us the app name and we will document it.
Autocorrect changed a drug name
Report it. Clinical terms and psych medication names are on a protection list and are never supposed to be corrected. Send the word you typed and what it became, and it goes into the test corpus so it cannot regress.
Restoring a purchase
Open NoteKey, go to Settings, then Restore Purchases. Purchases restore to the Apple Account that bought them.
Managing or cancelling a subscription
Subscriptions are managed by Apple: open the iOS Settings app, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Cancelling there stops the renewal and keeps Pro until the paid period ends.
Does NoteKey record my sessions?
No. It has no session recording and no ambient listening. Dictation transcribes the person holding the phone, on device, on an explicit tap.
Is anything I type sent anywhere?
