Terms of Use

Please read this before relying on anything Litmus tells you.

What Litmus is

Litmus reads product barcodes and ingredient lists and shows you our assessment of published information about the ingredients it finds. It is an information tool and an opinion, based on public regulatory and scientific sources that are cited on screen.

What Litmus is not

Allergies

Litmus can only check the ingredient text it manages to read. It cannot detect cross contact from shared equipment, it cannot read a label it could not photograph clearly, and manufacturers change recipes. Litmus never states that a product is free of an allergen. If you have a serious allergy, treat Litmus as a helper and the manufacturer as the authority.

Accuracy of data

Product data comes from the United States Department of Agriculture FoodData Central, which is a voluntary industry submission database, and cosmetic ingredient data comes from the European Commission CosIng database. Both are snapshots taken when the app version was built, and a package in your hand may have been reformulated since. If you find an error, please report it: see Corrections.

Limitation of liability

Litmus is provided as is, without warranty of any kind. To the fullest extent permitted by law, the developer is not liable for any loss or damage arising from use of the app or reliance on the information it shows. Nothing in these terms limits liability where it cannot lawfully be limited.

Purchases

Pro is optional. Subscriptions renew until cancelled and are managed entirely by Apple, under Apple standard terms. A free trial converts to a paid subscription unless cancelled before it ends. The allergen and ingredient safety features are free and are not part of any paid tier.

Governing terms

Your use of the app is also subject to the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions.

Litmus is made by an independent developer. Last updated 15 August 2026.
